Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are essential medical tools that can be lifesaving during incidents of cardiac arrest. There are hundreds of AEDs across the UT Austin main campus and J.J. Pickle Research campus that are maintained by OEM. As these devices are a vital campus resource, it is important that they are properly maintained, and that the campus community is trained on their appropriate usages.
Many of these AEDs are in Safety Hubs, which can be found in a building’s Celebrated Entrance. Visit our Celebrated Entrances and Safety Hubs page for more information.

Monthly AED Maintenance
To improve and centralize the AED inspection process, OEM has attached QR codes to every AED on campus managed by our office that links to a 3-question survey asking for the following information:
- Name of the person filling out the survey
- Department the individual is a part of
- Status of the AED
- Is the battery powered?
- Is the device in the correct location?
- Is there any damage to the device?
- Is the battery powered?
The questions in this survey cover the state-required inspection criteria, and all completed forms can be seen and managed by OEM. Should a device have an issue that needs to be addressed, that issue can be documented in the survey and an OEM staff member will handle the issue accordingly.
By adding QR codes and accessible surveys, building managers and their designees that work in buildings daily are enabled to fill out these inspection surveys. As these are brief surveys that only take a minute or less, this is a quick and effective measure that we are taking to monitor all OEM-owned AEDs across campus.
Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
To better communicate our office’s processes regarding AEDs, we have created a Standard Operating Procedure document that highlights the specifics of how this topic is being addressed. If you desire, this document provides more specific information regarding OEM’s procedures, or how these procedures may influence the day-to-day activities of your building.
